Marostica welcomes you with its majestic walls, mighty castles and its Piazza in the shape of an enormous chessboard. From high up on Pausolino hill, the Castello Superiore (Upper Castle) looks down on the old centre. The solid walls curve gracefully out round and down to meet at the Castello Inferiore (Lower Castle) in the main Piazza, encircling and protecting, the old town centre. A scenic footpath climbs the steep path that winds through the park on the slopes of Pausolino Hill, offering visitors an endless series of panoramas out over the Veneto Plain and down to the down, ever further below. A Chess Game, with people in lavish period costumes acting the part of the chess pieces, is held in Piazza Castello, in September (every second even-numbered year). Bassano del Grappa is an old town, it straddles the River Brenta at the foot of the mountains, near the entrance to the valley between Monte Grappa and the Altopiano di Asiago. Bassano is a town with a long cultural and artistic tradition. The old town centre, with its fine Piazzas, churches, towers and monuments, grew up around the Medieval nucleus on Colle di S. Maria: the Castle and the ancient Parish Church, Pieve di S. Maria, the “duomo” of the town.

Acelum, today’s Asolo, is 28 km far from Marostica. Nestling in an enchanting hilly landscape, Asolo is one of the best-known and loveliest villages in Italy. Dominated by the Rocca, Asolo has conserved its medieval atmosphere. The winding streets are flanked by porticoes, arcaded pavements, and ancient buildings some of which are still frescoed. The fascination of the art, the magic of the landscape, the ideal of a perfect refuge for the body and the soul have attracted many famous personalities to Asolo; people who have loved the city and lived there, down the ages, as the English Romantic poet Robert Browning, Eugene Benson, Henry James; Carlo Scarpa, an architect; writers Ernest Hemingway and Giosuè Carducci, the painter Flippo De Pisis and, musicians, Igor Strawinsky and Gian Francesco Malipiero. Eleonora Duce too, loved staying in Asolo and is even buried here in the cemetery of S.
